Vairagya is an attitude of mental dispassion, a capacity to firmly say ‘no’ to any temptation that hampers your spiritual pursuit. It fosters fearlessness in you, leading to an indifferent attitude towards possessions. This mental state of renunciation is illustrated in verse 18 of Bhaja Govindam as a carefree person who lives under trees, in temples, and sleeps on the floor. This happiness comes from the mind revelling in one’s true nature, which is Brahman. The next verse highlights that such a person, whether in company or alone and whether involved in worldly or spiritual activities, remains happy.
