Self-Denial

As opposed to indulgence, some people lead lives of strict abstinence. Verse 16 of Bhaja Govindam describes a youth who practises extreme restraint, denying himself even basic necessities such as clothing and shelter. However, this does not help him overcome his desires. The next verse discusses the majority of people who regularly undertake pilgrimages, uphold vows and perform charity. These noble acts may help you accumulate merits, but even living a hundred such lives will not exhaust your desires and lead you to Self-Realisation. All schools of thought agree that Knowledge-of-the-Self alone is the gateway to liberation.
