Pseudo Renunciation

Renunciation mainly refers to a mental state of detachment in which one rises above worldly temptations. This maturity stems from a foundation in higher values. Practising renunciation as a lifestyle is recommended only for those willing to observe strict austerities. Verse 14 of Bhaja Govindam condemns pseudo-renunciates as fools who display various forms of asceticism merely to earn a livelihood. The following three verses illustrate incorrect ways of trying to exhaust desires. Verse 15 describes an old man whose mind is full of desires; thus, dismissing the indulgent way of life as an unreliable method for exhausting desires.
