Knowledge Liberates

Verses 2 and 3 emphasize the importance of knowledge of Self. Action cannot eliminate ignorance because ignorance arises from it and is opposed to knowledge. Only knowledge can dispel ignorance, just as light can eliminate darkness. A single flash of light can remove all darkness, no matter how thick it is. Cooking may involve several preparatory steps, but the actual process depends directly on fire. Similarly, various supportive spiritual practices such as rituals, pilgrimages and prayers are necessary to purify your mind and prepare you for spiritual unfoldment. However, knowledge of Self remains the true direct path to liberation.
