Fourfold Qualifications
Viveka is the discrimination between the eternal and the ephemeral. Vairagya is the dispassion you demonstrate toward the fruits of your actions. Shad-sampatti, or the wealth of six qualities, includes Shama (mind control), Dama (sense control), Uparati (withdrawal), Titiksha (endurance), Shraddha (faith), and Samadhana (fixation). Mumukshatva is the earnest desire to attain liberation. Verse 1 of Atmabodha describes the qualifications of an ideal student of the text, who is well prepared on all levels of the personality: the annihilation of sins through austerities (physical), a calm mind (mental), free from desires (gross intellect) and a yearning for liberation (subtle intellect).
