Bhaja Govindam

Prakarana Granthas are introductory texts that explain the basic concepts of Vedanta. They prepare students to understand the deeper meanings of the wisdom found in the Upanishads. Bhaja Govindam is one such short text composed of thirty-one verses. The verses speak in a dual tone of devotion and intellect, appealing to both the heart and head. The text warns humanity against blindly pursuing worldly acquisition and enjoyment. Another name for this text is ‘Moha Mudgara,’ which means ‘Delusion Lifter.’ The author of Bhaja Govindam is philosopher-saint Adi Shankaracharya, who is regarded as an incarnation (Avatara) of Lord Shiva Himself.
